Florida’s ordinary resident individual pathway uses the 2-14 Resident Life (Including Annuities & Variable Contracts) Agent License. It normally requires a 30-hour approved prelicensing course, a MyProfile application, fingerprints and background review, and the Pearson VUE state examination. Education, examination, transfer, and military exceptions depend on the applicant’s facts. A license alone does not authorize insurance transactions; an appropriate appointment is also required.

Eligibility

Minimum age
18
Residency requirement / status
Ordinary resident-individual pathway for a bona fide Florida resident seeking the 2-14 Life (Including Annuities & Variable Contracts) authority. Nonresident, transfer, temporary, and foreign/military classes are separate routes.
General eligibility explanation
Be a natural person at least 18, be a bona fide Florida resident, be a U.S. citizen or a legal alien with work authorization, not hold another state’s resident license, and satisfy Florida’s class-specific restrictions. Final eligibility remains subject to Department review.

Prelicensing education

Prelicensing education required
Conditional
Required education hours
30 hours for the ordinary 2-14 resident route
Education requirement explanation
Ordinary applicants must successfully teach or complete a Florida-approved 30-hour life and variable-contracts prelicensing course within four years before applying. The required state study manual applies to course attendees, and the provider reports course completion to the Bureau.
Exemptions available
Conditional
Exemption explanation
ChFC or FLMI holders may satisfy the education prerequisite but still take the exam. A qualifying insurance degree, CLU designation, or timely equivalent-license transfer may remove the exam requirement. Reciprocal former residents may receive a course waiver while still needing the Florida exam. Military prequalification relief must be confirmed for the applicant’s class and circumstances.

Background

Fingerprints required
Yes
Background check required
Yes
Fingerprint / background instructions
Florida resident applicants register with IdentoGO by Idemia and submit fingerprints electronically through LiveScan. The posted fee is $49.50 plus applicable Florida county sales tax. Results are searched through FDLE and FBI records and sent electronically to Florida DFS. Results are generally valid for one year when the applicant does not already hold a valid Florida insurance license.

Application

Application required
Yes
Application fee
$50 filing fee plus $5 license-identification fee; fingerprint and exam fees are separate
Application channel / system
Florida DFS MyProfile online application
Application instructions
Apply in MyProfile, pay applicable fees, and provide proof of the qualifying prerequisite. Complete DFS fingerprinting. When an examination is required, follow the authorization message in MyProfile to schedule it. DFS must receive a passing result before qualification. After approval, print the license from MyProfile. An insurer appointment is still required before transacting insurance.

Renewal & maintenance

Renewal cycle
The individual license does not use a conventional periodic renewal; maintain CE and appointments. Obtain an appointment for each licensed class within 48 months to avoid license expiration.
Renewal fee
No separate ordinary individual-license renewal fee verified; the statutory appointment fee is generally $60 per appointment and appointments renew every 24 months
CE required
Conditional
CE hours
Ordinary requirement: 24 hours total; statutory reductions can lower elective hours for qualifying long-tenured licensees
CE cycle
Every two years, due on the last day of the licensee’s birth month
Ethics hours
4-hour Life and Annuity Law and Ethics update course (5-214)
CE explanation
The ordinary 2-14 requirement is the 4-hour 5-214 Law and Ethics update plus 20 elective credits every two years. MyProfile controls the individual compliance period. CE compliance is required to continue or renew an appointment.
CE exemptions / special rules
Elective hours may be reduced after 6 or 25 years under statutory conditions. Nonresident reciprocity and governmental-employment exceptions are separate. Product-specific annuity training must be evaluated separately.

Portability

Nonresident licensing available
Yes
Reciprocity / nonresident overview
Florida offers a separate 8-14 nonresident route. A new Florida resident who held equivalent resident authority continuously for at least one year may use the transfer route when applying within 90 days of becoming a resident; fingerprints remain required. Other former residents may qualify for state-specific prelicensing reciprocity while still needing the Florida examination.
Portability / mobility notes
Do not apply ordinary resident education or examination language automatically to nonresidents or transferring residents. The former resident authority, home state, continuous-license period, and application timing determine available relief.

Military / veteran / spouse

Veteran-specific provisions
Members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their spouses, and honorably discharged veterans, are exempt from the license application filing fee after submitting accepted documentation. DFS also describes a prequalification exemption; confirm its exact effect on the 2-14 examination before relying on it.
Military-spouse provisions
A spouse of a U.S. Armed Forces member may qualify for the application filing-fee and prequalification relief described by DFS after submitting accepted documentation. No separate insurance-specific expedited-processing promise was verified.
Fee waiver available
Yes
Expedited processing available
No
Military experience / education credit
Conditional
Temporary / provisional authority
Florida offers a separate T2-14 temporary Life class and a separate 0-93 foreign/military class. Neither is part of this ordinary resident-individual pathway.
